Buchanan has spent years documenting unusual stone features found throughout the forests
of the Northeast and investigating interpretations that connect some of these structures
with Indigenous cultural landscapes. During this program, he will share examples from
across the region, including features located in the woods at Hilltop Hanover Farm.

About the Presentation
The forests of the Lower Hudson Valley contain stone walls, arrangements, piles,
boulders, and other landscape features whose origins and meanings have prompted
considerable research and debate.
In this approximately one-hour presentation, Rob Buchanan will discuss
distinctive examples he has documented and the evidence used by researchers who interpret
some of these features as connected to Native American cultural landscapes.
The presentation will include examples found at Hilltop Hanover Farm
and will also address threats facing historic stone landscapes and efforts to document
and preserve them.
Optional Guided Hike
Following the indoor presentation, participants may join Buchanan for an
optional 1.5–2 hour hike along the farm’s trails to view several
stone features in their landscape setting.
Guests planning to participate in the hike should come prepared for outdoor trail
conditions and wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
About Rob Buchanan
Rob Buchanan is an independent researcher who has been a member of the
New England Antiquities Research Association (NEARA) for more than 20 years
and currently serves as its Treasurer.
Buchanan has led NEARA conferences and regional field trips and has presented his research
to museums and community organizations. His writing has appeared in the
NEARA Transit newsletter and the Rock Piles blog, and he regularly
contributes to discussions surrounding stone structures and cultural landscapes
throughout the Northeast.
